Mount Parnitha



The National Park of Parnitha is a densely forested mountain range 30km north of Athens, the highest in Attica (1,413m). The vegetation is lush with small plateaus, springs, caves and gorges. The climate is ideal with an average temperature of 3οC in winter and 20οC in summer. On Mavrovouni (Black mountain) peak lies the Regency Casino Mont Parnés accessible by car or cable car.

Its forests encompass diverse flora species such as the Greek fir, Aleppo pine, the common juniper, poplars, walnut trees or arbutus, whilst its fauna comprises the red deer, foxes, badgers and so on.

Furthermore, there are two mountain refuges, one at Mpafi (1,160 m) and the other one at Flampouri (1,158 m).

Outdoor Activities

Mt Parnitha is ideal for outdoor activities, such as road or mountain biking, hiking along designated trails or rock-climbing for beginners and experienced climbers alike.

EOS Acharnon (Acharnes Alpine Club) provides classes and outings for mountaineers and hikers to Parnitha area as well as trips to a variety of places in Greece and abroad.

Regency Casino Mont Parnés

Three km west of Thrakomakedones there is the cable car station offering the transport of visitors to ‘the Regency Casino Mont Parnés’.

▪ Tatoi Estate

At a distance of 7 km, north of the neighbouring Varibobi, visitors can explore the most important historic monument of Parnitha National Park. It is the palace of the former Greek royal family at Tatoi area, along with its outbuildings. The site is characterised by dense flora, picturesque paths and meadows.

▪ Holy Temple Church of the Trinity

The Holy Temple Church of the Trinity has been Thrakomakedones parish since 1959 situated at the junction of Alexander the Great and Thassou Streets.

▪ Agiou Pavlou (St Paul’s) Monastery of Mount Athos

▪ St George Vourdoubas Chapel

This chapel is located on the west 2 km from the area comprising mural paintings dating from 14th-15th century.

▪ The Holy Trinity of Water Chapel (location Metohi-Mt Parnitha)

This picturesque chapel, built during the Byzantine era next to a spring, lies 17 km from Thrakomakedones, on the way to the Regency Casino Mont Parnés at an altitude of 1,000 m. offering Sunday Mass. It is a favourite venue for mountaineers, cyclists and hikers.

▪ Lake Beletsi

It is a small lake located at an altitude of 600 m. on the eastern slopes of Mt Parnitha at a distance of 20 min drive time. This artificial lake covers a 7,000 sqm area and is an important site for migratory birds, ducks and swans, also fish, mainly carp.

▪ Sophocles Tomb

The ‘Tomb of Sophocles’ is located at a distance of 3.5 km from Aristotle Square on the way towards Varibobi. According to the biographer of the poet, the tomb belongs to Sophocles – one of classical Athens’ three great tragic playwrights.
